VISITING EXPERT IN UROLOGY
Dr Ian Eardley the Ministry's HMDP Visiting Expert in Urology. His HMDP Programme is scheduled for 11 Aug 2023 to 20 Aug 2023.
ABOUT THE VISIT/HMDP EXPERT
The Department of Urology, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, is delighted to welcome Dr Ian Eardley as the FY23 HMDP Visiting Expert. Dr Eardley brings expertise to Singapore in his role as a Surgical Educator, Health services administrator, and expert Surgeon in reconstructive urology. His present appointments include Consultant Urologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, the current National Clinical Director Elective Care Recovery, NHS England, and the current Chair of the Council of Medical Protection Society (MPS).
Dr Eardley is highly involved and experienced in surgical education. He was the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) director of education from 2002 – 2006. He had chaired all the major intercollegiate committees that oversee surgical and urological training in the UK. These committees have responsibility for certification, curriculum development, assessment, quality assurance and trainee management. Notably, he was the Chairman of the Joint Committee for Surgical Training from 2011 – 2014, and he was the Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from 2016 – 2018. Most recently, Dr Eardley was also the Surgical Lead in the Improving Surgical Training (IST) project in the UK from 2015 to 2021. The principles upon which the programme was based include less onerous service work for trainees, better trained and educated (professionalised) surgical trainers, workforce transformation, more time for training, widespread introduction of simulation to support surgical training and competence-based progression. His work culminated in the launch of a new training programme in General Surgery in August 2018, with subsequent programmes in Urology, Vascular Surgery and Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2019. By inviting Dr Eardley to speak on the IST project and his experiences in the various surgical education committees, the Surgical Heads of Department will be able to gain insight into the evolution of surgical training in the UK and hence improve our own accreditation processes.
Dr Ian Eardley was the Clinical Lead in Urology at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust from 2012 – 2017, having been appointed as Consultant in the Trust since 1993. During his leadership, he developed a multidisciplinary assessment and treatment process in the areas of Andrology assessment and treatment, prostate assessment and Urodynamics. Among his various initiatives, he introduced nurse delivered outpatient cystoscopy, thereby increasing capacity and freeing medical time to undertake outpatient and main theatre work. Dr Eardley remains the supra-regional MDT lead for penile cancer in West Yorkshire, Humberside, and South Yorkshire. Hence Dr Eardley is an excellent candidate to guide administrators in Urology on the development of MDT services, including empowering Advance Practice Nurses and Nurse Clinicians in outpatient clinical urology work.
Dr Eardley is a highly experienced senior Urologist with significant research achievements in bladder dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, quality of life following partial and total penectomy for penile cancer, and urinary tract infection and antibiotic prophylaxis. He served on the editorial board of reputable journals including Journal of Sexual Medicine, British Journal of Urology International, and Therapeutic advances in Urology. He has written or edited 8 textbooks, including the Oxford Textbook of Urology (2017), over 50 textbook chapters and over 180 peer review publications. These peer review publications span the topics of Surgery-in-General, Urology-in-General, Neuro-urology, Sexual dysfunction, Urothelial function and dysfunction, Training and Education, and Penile cancer. Mr Eardley is an excellent trainer to share his surgical knowledge and expertise on reconstructive urology, penile oncology, and andrological surgery. These are surgical domains that lack local training opportunities. While some Urologists in Singapore had received overseas training in these areas, Mr Eardley brings bags of experience due to his high surgical caseload at a tertiary referral centre in UK.
