HSA Adverse Drug Reaction News 2009 December, Vol. 11 No. 3
The aim of the news bulletin is to increase the awareness of adverse drug reactions amongst healthcare professionals, and to promote adverse reaction reporting to medicinal products. This issue includes topics such as monitoring the safety profile of Influenza A/H1N1(2009) vaccines, suspension of sales of dextropropoxyphene-containing products, new online search on illegal health products, important drug interactions, compliance to the safety monitoring protocols of the 'RevAssure Programme' of lenalidomide (Revlimid®), Tinzaparin (Innohep®) and risk of death in the elderly with renal impairment and local experience with oseltamivir (Tamiflu®).

Managing Influenza A (H1N1-2009)

Influenza A (H1N1-2009) has become endemic among global communities. Yesterday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) informed that countries are no longer required to submit regular reports of individual laboratory-confirmed cases and deaths to WHO. This is because the reporting of such numbers is no longer a useful monitoring tool. WHO has also decided that it will no longer publish the global tables showing the number of confirmed cases for all countries.

Positive Feedback on the Proposed Amendments to the Medical Registration Act
The Ministry of Health (MOH) conducted a public consultation from 14 Jan 2009 to 25 Feb 2009 to seek the public's views and feedback on the proposed amendments to the Medical Registration Act (MRA). The proposed changes include the establishment of a Register for Family Physicians, defining appropriate subspecialties, streamlining of registration and disciplinary proceedings.
