Diagnostic Radiographers

What do diagnostic radiographers do?
Diagnostic radiographers work with sophisticated medical radiation equipment and make use of a wide range of techniques to produce radiographic images of the body. These radiographic images will assist the healthcare team in the diagnosis of illnesses and injuries.

Apart from using X-ray equipment, diagnostic radiographers also utilise high-end computer hardware and software to process data and perform complex multi-planar and three-dimensional reconstructions in radiological investigations. These include using:

  • Computerised Tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Ultrasound

With the advancement of Information Technology in the medical field, diagnostic radiographers increasingly find themselves involved in managing the technology required in the production, display, manipulation, transmission and archival of radiographic images, such as that required for teleradiology.

What are the fields of practice for diagnostic radiographers?
There are also opportunities to work in areas such as (but not limiting to):

  • Dental imaging
  • Flouroscopy/Barium Examinations
  • Mammography
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Vascular & Interventional Radiology

What educational qualifications do I need to practice as a diagnostic radiographer in Singapore?
In Singapore, a minimum diploma qualification is required to practice as a diagnostic radiographer. Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) offers a 3-year Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography course.

Degree-conversion programmes in overseas universities are available for NYP graduates wishing to upgrade their Diploma.
