What do dietitians do?
Dietitians apply scientific knowledge of food and human nutrition to maintain and promote the health of individuals, groups, and the community, and to manage and treat various medical conditions. They act as consultants to other medical and allied health professionals, food industry and media on all aspects of nutrition therapy.

Clinical dietitians are key members in the multidisciplinary healthcare team in a hospital. They assess the nutritional well-being of patients and customise medical nutrition therapy and implement specific diet strategies for the management of chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, acute illnesses, or injuries.

Clinical dietitians also provide dietary counseling and special nutritional care plan for patients who are not able to take by mouth and have to be fed through a tube or directly into the bloodstream.

What are the fields of practice for dietitians?
There are also opportunities to work in areas such as (but not limiting to):  

  • Geriatrics
  • Nephrology
  • Oncology
  • Food service management

 

What educational qualifications do I need to practice as a dietitian in Singapore?
You must complete formal tertiary education to qualify as a dietitian.

Minimum Qualification

:: Bsc in Dietetics or Food & Nutrition and
:: Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics.

 

Institute for training

:: Overseas tertiary institutions

 

Duration of Study

:: 3-4 years for degree and
:: 1-2 years for postgraduate diploma

 

Additional Requirements

:: A 6-month clinical internship training period is also required
